Description
An image service provides access to raster data through a web service. Multiple rasters can be served as one image service through mosaic dataset technology, dynamically processed and mosaicked on the fly. An image service supports accessing the mosaicked image, its catalog, and the individual rasters in the catalog.
An image service supports dynamic access and tiled access. Dynamic access provides many more functionalities, and tiled access provides faster access to pre-rendered pictures.
The Image Service resource supports the following operations:
- Export Image—Dynamically generate an image based on client-specified band selection, format, mosaic rule, and raster functions.
- Query—Query the raster catalog.
- Identify—Identify pixel values and raster visibilities.
- Download—Download source rasters in original and various formats.
- Measure—Measure height, distance, direction, area, and perimeter.
- Compute Histograms—Compute histograms based on an area of interest, pixel size, mosaic rule, and rendering rule.
- Add, Update, Delete—Edit image services by adding new rasters, updating existing rasters and attributes, and deleting existing rasters.
- Uploads—Upload raster files that can be used in add and update raster operations.
- Get Samples—Get source raster pixel values and their resolutions.
- Compute Class Statistics—Compute class statistics signatures (used by the maximum likelihood classifier).
- Compute Tie Points—Get tie points that can be used to match the source image to the reference image.
Basic raster information, including its spatial reference, extent, pixel size, pixel type, number of bands, band statistics, thumbnail, key properties, and metadata can be accessed for the entire image as well as individual rasters (through Raster Catalog Item).
The REST API Image Service resource represents an image service published with ArcGIS Server. The resource provides basic information associated with the image service, such as the service description, its name, description, extent, pixel sizes, and band counts.
At 10.3.1 and later, this resource also does the following:
Returns the advancedQueryCapabilities property, indicates the following: useStandardizedQueries, supportsStatistics, supportsOrderBy, supportsDistinct, and supportsPagination.
At 10.3 and later, this resource also does the following:
Returns the hasMultidimensions property, which indicates whether a multidimensionalInfo resource is available.
Returns the optional lercError property in tileInfo, which is available for LERC compressed cache tiles.
Takes an optional renderingRule parameter.
At 10.2.1 and later, this resource also returns the supportsStatistics and supportsAdvancedQueries properties. Both return true if the data source is a mosaic dataset in a file or enterprise workspace.
At 10.2 and later, this resource also returns the allowComputeTiepoints and useStandardizedQueries properties.
At 10.1 and later, the Image Service resource has an input option and outSR parameters to support viewing of an image service footprint in the ArcGIS Online map viewer.
At 10.1 and later, this resource also includes the following:
- initialExtent, fullExtent, singleFusedMapCache, and tileInfo properties that indicate cache information of the service.
- defaultMosaicMethod, mosaicOperator, defaultCompressionQuality, and defaultResamplingMethod properties that indicate service defaults. The default mosaic rule is composed of defaultMosaicMethod and mosaicOperator. When defaultMosaicMethod is esriMosaicAttribute, Image Service uses sortField and sortValue along with it.
- allowRasterFunction, allowedMosaicMethods, maxRecordCount, maxImageHeight, maxImageWidth, maxDownloadImageCount,maxDownloadSizeLimit, and maxMosaicImageCount properties that indicate service constraints.
- rasterFunctionInfos, rasterTypeInfos, and mensurationCapabilities properties that indicate supported raster function templates (for exportimage), raster types (for add/update rasters), and mensuration capabilities (for mensuration).
- hasHistograms, hasColormap, and hasRasterAttributeTable properties that indicate if a corresponding resource is available for the service.
- capabilities property that indicates supported operations.
- editFieldsInfo and ownershipBasedAccessControlForRasters containing editor tracking and access control related properties.
At 10.0 and later, this resource also returns the accessible fields and timeInfo of the image service.

"description": "This service hosts a raster image generated from raw DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data gathered for the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The mission was co-sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) performed preliminary processing of SRTM data and forwarded it to the NGA for further processing and distribution. The raster image hosted by this service was generated using ArcGIS tools to convert DEM data for the state of California into a raster image. The results were reprojected into World Mercator (WKID: 54004) for display purposes. Pixel size is approximately 90 meters and vertical units are defined in meters.
